Israeli forces flatten a Hebron neighbourhood and drive out around 1,500 people after two soldiers were killed at a checkpoint

Hebron's municipality says 86 acres of Ein Deir Baha have been destroyed or marked for demolition, with soldiers spray-painting crosses on homes. The whole city of 250,000 is sealed off at every entrance. Benjamin Netanyahu, who trails his rivals before Tuesday's election, vowed that the buildings would be 'destroyed'. The military says its operation will last several days.

Mayor Youssef al-Jaabari says the military plans to displace 2,500 people in total.

Activist Issa Amro said 'innocent families pay the price' for an attack they never supported.

Hamas praised Friday's checkpoint attack as a 'heroic operation' and urged more.
