Israeli troops raze a Hebron neighbourhood and seal off the West Bank city after gunmen killed two soldiers

By Saturday afternoon, the Hebron municipality reported that roughly 1,500 residents had been displaced, with 35 hectares in Ein Deir Baha either demolished or earmarked for demolition. Every entry point to the city of 250,000 is sealed by checkpoints. Staff Sgt Ron Yonatan Roytman, 23, and Sgt Yuval Shai Svilem, 20, were killed in Friday's 20-minute gunfight. The attack occurred days before Tuesday's election, in which Benjamin Netanyahu has trailed Gadi Eisenkot in the polls.

Netanyahu vowed at the attack site: 'We will act to destroy this place.'

Hamas praised the attack as a 'heroic operation' and urged supporters to carry out more.

Videos from the city show soldiers spraying black crosses on Palestinian houses marked for demolition.
