Italy is to send 500 troops to 'defend Milan' as luxury shops board up after a weekend of looting

Police in Milan arrested around 270 people, most of them minors, after hooded rioters set bins ablaze and ransacked stores including Decathlon, Arc'teryx and Vodafone. Some 141 police officers were injured in the clashes. Deputy PM Matteo Salvini wrote 'From words to action' on social media. The deployment is expected to be approved at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

Chanel, Tiffany and Dior stripped their Via Montenapoleone windows bare while police patrolled.

Giorgia Meloni is reportedly weighing longer preventive detention for minors and a youth-gang crackdown.

The chaos began as a peaceful protest over poor public services and rising costs.
