Italy issues tsunami alert and evacuates schools in Palermo and Messina after TWELVE earthquakes strike off Sicily
The largest quake hit at around 12.20pm on Friday. The US Geological Survey measured it at magnitude 5.7, while Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology put it at 5.0. A courthouse in Trapani was evacuated, and a cliff face reportedly gave way on Filicudi in the Aeolian Islands. Sicilian Civil Protection chief Salvo Cocina cautioned that further aftershocks remained possible. No injuries or damage have been reported.
An orange alert signals waves under 0.5 metres and does not guarantee a tsunami.
Palermo Mayor Roberto Lagalla told residents to keep away from the sea.
People felt the tremors as far away as Licata, some 180km from the epicentre.
