A mechanic at Fukuoka airport discovered the 40cm snake under the carpet of a Japan Air Commuter plane, with a wildlife expert taking around 24 hours to catch it.

It took a wildlife control expert a full 24 hours to catch the 40cm stowaway aboard the Japan Air Commuter ATR42. The plane had flown in from Izumo and was due to leave for Kagoshima at 12.50pm on Monday. Japan Airlines says no snake has ever got into one of its cabins before. Officials believe the harmless reptile came from the wild, but nobody knows how it got on board.

The creature was a non-venomous Japanese striped snake, which can grow up to 200cm.

In 2019, a passenger unwittingly carried a black racer snake from Florida to Maui in his rucksack.

An AirAsia flight was rerouted in 2022 after a pale yellow snake slithered along a lighting panel.
