Jeffrey Archer, who sold more than 300 million books across 49 languages, died suddenly at home on Monday, one day before the scheduled release of his final novel, *Adam and Eve*.Jeffrey Archer, whose 1979 novel *Kane and Abel* alone has sold over 30 million copies, performed at a sold-out London show the night before his death.
Lord Archer of Weston-super-Mare died "suddenly and peacefully at his home between writing sessions" on Monday, HarperCollins confirmed, just 24 hours after appearing on stage with Gyles Brandreth at a sold-out Leicester Square Theatre event to celebrate his 31st and final novel, 'Adam and Eve', published today. Brandreth wrote on X that Archer had been "in the most wonderful, ebullient form" and was "funny, engaging and self-deprecating — a great storyteller to the last." The Baron had sold more than 320 million books across 115 countries over a 50-year career and had told a BBC interviewer just last week he felt "wistful and nostalgic" — but seemed, the presenter said, "so well, so fit and healthy."
Archer had declared "I shall not be retiring" in one of his final interviews, though he added: "I think the clever thing in life is when to get out."
He served two years in prison after an Old Bailey jury found he had lied in his 1987 libel action against the Daily Star, in which he had been awarded £500,000 damages.
Archer first picked up a pen at 34, bankrupt after being swindled by a fraudulent Canadian company — his debut novel 'Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less' became a bestseller.
