Jermaine Pennant, who spent Friday night in hospital after being bitten four times on his right leg, says his American Akita drove the attacking German Shepherd away.

Former Arsenal and Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant, 43, was bitten four times on his right leg in north London after stepping in when a German Shepherd first turned on his dog King. He was knocked to the ground and held there until his American Akita drove the dog away. Pennant spent Friday night in hospital, where doctors warned one wound may require plastic surgery, and the attack has not been reported to police.

Girlfriend Mimmi Montgomery took him to A&E by Uber.

Pennant was philosophical: 'It's just one of those things.'

King came back bloodied, though none of the blood was Pennant's.
