John Swinney declares the Scottish referendum campaign 'has already begun' but his 'six-figure war chest' starts at just £100,000
John Swinney's voice quivered as he told the SNP conference in Aberdeen he wants independence for his 15-year-old son Matthew, who was in the audience. The new drive, called 'Choose Scotland', is billed as the party's 'most sophisticated campaign' ever. SNP membership has fallen to around 51,000 from a peak of about 125,000 in 2019. The party lost seats at Holyrood in May.
The SNP still carries a £60,000 loan from jailed former chief executive Peter Murrell.
Swinney's spokesman would not say if money Murrell embezzled could fund the campaign.
Swinney took aim at Andy Burnham: 'Scotland is no city. We are no region.'
