Karl Bushby, 57, is expected to complete his 31,000-mile walk home to Hull on Monday, nearly 28 years after the former paratrooper left Chile aged 29 with a cart and two rules: no transport, and no return until done. He swam the English Channel just weeks ago and is now pushing through rural Lincolnshire. He faces an identity crisis he calls as daunting as any terrain he has crossed.

He navigated the frozen Bering Strait, floated through crocodile-infested water to dodge a Colombian guerrilla war, and faced down a polar bear.

'My purpose and reason for living is about to end,' he said, comparing himself to Odysseus — and winning.
