Kemi Badenoch vows a Tory government will strip settled status from migrants granted it under Labour's watered-down crackdown

Badenoch pledged that any migrant granted indefinite leave to remain under Labour's immigration reforms will lose that status under a future Conservative government if they fail to make a "net contribution" to Britain. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced Monday that she was exempting nearly 300,000 foreign care workers from her original crackdown, allowing those earning at least £25,000 to apply for settlement after just five years. Of 1.9 million foreign nationals due to become eligible for settlement by 2030, only 500,000 will now face longer waits under the scaled-back plans.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp claimed allowing care workers to settle could cost taxpayers £10bn a year through benefits, healthcare and social housing.

Mahmood had originally proposed making care workers wait 15 years for settlement — a plan she ditched after a cabinet backlash and pressure from health unions.

A BBC presenter confronted Philp over the Tories' own record, noting net migration peaked at over 900,000 under Boris Johnson when Philp was a Home Office minister.
