Kindergartner Rhoam Summer, 5, is named as youngest victim as Oregon school gunman kills three children and a teacher
Rhoam Summer, a five-year-old kindergartner who had started school just last month, has been identified as the youngest of four people murdered at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, after 16-year-old John J. Smith blasted his way through locked doors with his mother's shotgun and opened fire in the special education wing. Smith killed Rhoam along with children aged eight and 11, and a teacher, before armed bystander Kaylub Giamanco, 36, chased him into the school and shot him dead — just three minutes before police arrived. Rhoam's father Kelik Summer wrote on Facebook: 'Today has been the worst day of my life.'
A wheelchair-bound seven-year-old was shot in the face and a 54-year-old teacher is also in critical condition in hospital.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised the armed bystander who ended the rampage, saying his actions 'likely saved lives.'
Smith used a pump-action shotgun bought by his own mother; Oregon law allows a minor to possess a shotgun provided by a parent.
