King Charles, 77, stood at Independence Park in Georgetown — a former public execution ground — where 33 people linked to the 1823 Demerara Rebellion were hanged after British colonial forces crushed the uprising. Guyana's Culture Minister Steven Jacobs showed him a plaque commemorating those condemned to death, while Charles acknowledged the 'shameful' aspects of British history. Buckingham Palace has made clear he will not apologise or discuss reparations, in line with government policy.

The 1823 rebellion began on the plantation of Sir John Gladstone, father of a future British prime minister, when an enslaved man rang a bell to signal the uprising.

Protester and Guyanese politician Terrence Campbell told crowds: 'This great wealth was built on the backs of slavery' and demanded Britain pay reparations.

Jonathan Yeo, the figurative artist behind the controversial royal portrait, has been appointed official artist for the Caribbean tour.
