Kingspan faces €40m EU fine for misleading competition watchdog over failed Slovenian takeover bid

Insulation giant Kingspan has been fined €40m by the European Commission after regulators concluded it provided incorrect and misleading information during their merger investigation into its planned takeover of Slovenian rival Trimo. The Co Cavan-based firm was found to have committed four separate breaches of EU merger rules, at €10m each. Kingspan says it will appeal the ruling in full.

The Commission found Kingspan had asserted the non-existence of key documents, misrepresented facts, and claimed it was impossible to supply information only it could provide.

Competition Commissioner Teresa Ribera warned: 'When companies withhold or distort the truth, they undermine a system that protects fair competition for everyone.'

Kingspan also faces a separate €100m investor lawsuit in the UK from more than 60 institutional investors over its alleged links to the Grenfell Tower disaster.
