Kremlin praises Trump's suspension of Congress-backed Russia sanctions as 'historic' a week after he agreed to buy Russian diesel
Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev hailed the suspension of the Graham Act as 'truly historic' only hours after President Donald Trump signed it away. The law was due to take effect on Sunday and would have hit Russian oil and gas exports. It allowed tariffs of up to 100 per cent on the five biggest buyers of Russian crude or gas. Trump told Congress the waiver served 'the national interests of the United States'.
Trump signed the law last month. It was named after the late senator Lindsey Graham.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged allies to support the new sanctions after Trump put them on hold.
The move follows Trump's deal to buy more than 300,000 tons of Russian diesel ahead of the midterms.
