Kristi Noem loses special envoy role months after Trump fired her from Homeland Security

Kristi Noem has lost her position as Trump's special envoy to the Shield of the Americas after the role lapsed last month, rounding off a difficult year that saw her dismissed as Homeland Security Secretary in March. She will remain a senior adviser to Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau, continuing to cover the same portfolio. The end of her envoy role comes as her husband Bryon has sought spousal support in court filings submitted weeks after Noem, 54, filed for divorce on grounds of irreconcilable differences.
Noem was ousted from DHS following the deaths of two US citizens — Renée Good and Alex Pretti — shot by ICE officers in Minnesota, killings she initially described as 'domestic terrorism'.
Her time at DHS also attracted criticism over a $220 million advertising campaign featuring her at Mount Rushmore and urging undocumented immigrants to 'self-deport'.
Noem maintains the envoy position 'was always a six-month appointment' — Trump, for his part, publicly thanked her for 'a really terrific job' at a Shield of the Americas summit last month.
