Labour gives Green Party seven days to ditch 'Zionism is racism' motion or lose council power-sharing deals

Labour has issued a seven-day ultimatum to Green Party council partners — explicitly reject the 'Zionism is racism' motion passed at the Greens' annual conference or lose all local power-sharing arrangements. Prime Minister Andy Burnham called the policy "antisemitic" at Prime Minister's Questions, ruling out any future partnership with the party. Labour chair Bridget Phillipson warned the motion has "no place in British politics" and confirmed guidance has gone to all affected local groups, including in Sheffield and Lewes.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has written to the Green Party to assess the motion's practical implications and potential impact under the Equality Act 2010.

Green Party leader Zack Polanski fired back at Burnham on X, saying: 'You're a prime minister who arms a genocide and locks pensioners up for opposing it.'

Labour's guidance is explicit — unless local Green partners call on their national party to reconsider the policy within seven days, 'any local power sharing agreement will end.'
