Labour government approves the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea, sparking an angry backlash from climate campaigners
Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh and Chancellor John Healey are expected to unveil the decision in Aberdeen this morning, with Fahnbulleh due to address MPs later. The field lies 150 miles off Aberdeen and is run by Adura, the Shell-Equinor venture, and backers say it could support up to 3,500 jobs. A ruling on the bigger Rosebank oil field will take 'a bit longer'. Ministers fear household bills could jump by hundreds of pounds in January.
Uplift's Tessa Khan says Jackdaw will meet 'just 2%' of Britain's gas demand.
Campaigners urged Andy Burnham to 'stick to the spirit' of Labour's no-new-licences pledge.
Donald Trump has told Burnham that Britain is 'sitting on top of gold'.
