Labour MP blasts Shabana Mahmood's 'cruel' 30-year settlement wait for small boat migrants and warns around 100 backbenchers are unhappy

Rachel Maskell, MP for York Central, warned that up to 100 Labour backbenchers are "privately unhappy" with Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood's new immigration settlement proposals, raising the prospect of a backbench rebellion to rival this year's welfare vote. Maskell called the 30-year wait imposed on small boat arrivals "cruel" and demanded Mahmood work directly with MPs to revise the package before it reaches the Commons.

Under Mahmood's plans, the settlement period for many migrants would double from five years to ten.

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch vowed that migrants who fail to make a 'net contribution' will face losing settled status altogether if the Conservatives return to power.
