Labour refuses to tell pensioners how much they will lose from scrapping the triple lock before Wednesday's Budget

MPs asked Work and Pensions Minister Torsten Bell to set out the annual reduction in pension income between 2030 and 2040 under the proposed changes. He directed them to a previous answer that contained no figures whatsoever. Ministers maintain the reform will save billions to fund Andy Burnham's National Care Service. Chancellor John Healey is expected to confirm a 3.9% state pension rise from April 2027 on Wednesday.

Bell's earlier reply said only that payments depend on national insurance records.

The full new state pension would climb from £241.30 to about £250.70 a week.

Wage growth hit 3.9% between May and July, beating inflation and the 2.5% floor.
