Harriet Harman urges ministers to approve Rosebank oil field while the energy secretary is reportedly poised to reject it

Baroness Harriet Harman, Labour's former deputy leader, has joined Scottish Labour leader Michael Marra in demanding a green light for the field 80 miles north-west of Shetland. Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh is said to be leaning towards refusal days after approving the Jackdaw gas field off Aberdeen. Left-wing Labour MPs have signed a joint letter urging her to block it. A ruling is expected before the end of 2026.
Fahnbulleh insists the call is hers alone: 'Ultimately, only I can make that decision.'
Tory MP Douglas Lumsden says rejecting Rosebank would be 'cruel, unnecessary and uneconomic'.
Officials reportedly say Rosebank would emit roughly seven times the carbon of Jackdaw.
