Labour's Sheriff of Nottingham signed off as 'the Sheriff' to bag £22,500 off his Land Rover repairs, report finds
Labour councillor Zafran Khan, who previously served as Sheriff of Nottingham, was found by an external investigation to have breached the code of conduct on eight counts — obtaining a £22,500 discount on Land Rover repairs, complimentary tickets to Paw Patrol Live and a Tate McRae concert, and hospitality he failed to declare. Khan disputed every finding in a 16-page legal submission, with his lawyer Mannat Malhi of Matrix Chambers arguing that the report contains legal and factual errors. Khan is the brother of Nottingham City Council leader Neghat Khan, though she faces no accusation of wrongdoing.
Using his council email account and signing off as 'the Sheriff of Nottingham', Khan contacted the Stratstone dealership and brought a £30,000 repair bill down to £7,500.
The Standards and Governance Committee hearing was suspended after Khan's lawyers raised objections to alleged pre-determination by one panellist.
Khan attributed his failure to remember hospitality training to fatigue, and argued that a glass of prosecco and a canapé did not meet the £25 threshold requiring declaration.
