Former paratrooper Karl Bushby, 57, walked the final three miles from Hull city centre to his mother Angela's terraced house in Sutton Park on Monday, completing a 31,000-mile trek across 29 countries that began in Chile in 1998. His son Adam, now 36 but just eight when Bushby left, was also waiting at the door alongside his granddaughter.

Bushby said he is 'hanging his boots up' and is working with filmmaker Werner Herzog on a documentary about the journey.

He told reporters he justified leaving his son behind by reasoning: 'If I can pull this off, I would be of more meaning to him than any other way.'

Angela, 78, who had not seen her son for a decade, told reporters simply: 'It's good to have him home.'
