Liberal US Supreme Court justice Elena Kagan claims her conservative colleagues' rulings have been 'destructive' to American democracy

Elena Kagan delivered her criticism at Catholic University's law school on Tuesday, just a fortnight ahead of the fiercely fought midterm elections. Her remarks took aim at the court's rulings on voting rights, gerrymandering and campaign finance. Kagan, one of three liberals on the bench, said the majority had 'blinded itself' to the damage. She argued the outcome is 'a democracy that does not work as well as it should'.

Kagan authored the dissent when the court ended federal challenges to partisan voting maps in 2019.
