Lidl is crowned the UK's 'cheapest supermarket' for essentials while Tesco is the dearest for an ELEVENTH week running

Aldi fell to third place at £13.09 after the price of its lowest-priced beef mince pack rose by 10p, with Asda in second at £13.03. Lidl's eight-item basket — spanning bread and milk through to 240 tea bags — came to £12.97. Tesco's total reached £13.36, while Sainsbury's placed fifth at £13.33. Shelf prices are running 2.5 per cent above last year's levels, heaping further strain on households already struggling with fuel and energy costs.

Aldi says Which? has named it the cheapest supermarket for five years running.

Morrisons sat fourth at £13.17 and insists it offers 'good, honest value'.

Sainsbury's said the review 'does not reflect the fantastic value' found in store.
