Live grenade drill sparked the Canadian army base fire that killed four soldiers, and troops KEPT training while it burned

Commanders knew about the blaze at CFB Wainwright in Alberta for hours but believed it was contained, Major General Wade Rutland said. The flames started on a 'permanent danger area' range feared to be littered with unexploded ordnance, so base firefighters could not tackle them. A windstorm with 62mph gusts then drove the fire into a second training area. Sergeant Morgan Wong and Privates Shaun Farrell, Aidan Goulding and Hayden Lykkemark died.

The roughly 84 troops were preparing to deploy to Latvia.

Of the 39 injured, 27 remain in hospital and 19 are listed as critical.

Rutland: 'That is not normal for a fire to move a kilometre in 36 seconds.'
