Yasin Munye, a teacher at Hackney Islamic Community Centre, urged worshippers in sermons posted on the mosque's YouTube channel to physically "discipline" wives who refuse sex or defy their husbands. After the National Secular Society reported the centre to the Charity Commission, the regulator launched a regulatory compliance case.

Munye also described gay sex as 'one of the most evil of acts' and endorsed the execution of those accused of homosexuality under his reading of Sharia law.

A community elder at the centre called it an 'unfortunate reality' that women now feel able to call police when struck by their husbands.

The mosque had converted to a charitable incorporated organisation in April 2026, shielding trustees from personal liability — just weeks before the scandal came to light.
