A London Overground train hit the buffers at Liverpool Street station at around 1am on Thursday, derailing and forcing the closure of platforms 1, 2 and 3 for the rest of the day. The driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital before being discharged. Transport for London's Rory O'Neill confirmed the out-of-service train was travelling at low speed when it struck the buffer stop.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch sent an inspector to the scene and will decide whether to launch a full investigation after reviewing evidence.

Commuters faced a miserable rush hour, with Greater Anglia cancelling or diverting services to Stansted Airport, Cambridge North and Hertford East, with severe delays on the Weaver line expected to continue into Friday.

Signal failures on the District line and a broken-down train at Nine Elms on the Northern line added to the chaos, leaving passengers across west and central London running late.
