A London Overground driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries — and later discharged — after an out-of-service train struck the buffers at Liverpool Street station at around 1am on Thursday, derailing its wheels. Platforms 1, 2 and 3 at Britain's busiest railway station remained closed throughout the day, with disruption forecast to carry into Friday.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch sent an inspector to Liverpool Street and will decide whether to launch a full inquiry after reviewing the evidence.

Greater Anglia cancelled or rerouted services to Stansted Airport, Cambridge North and Hertford East, while Weaver line trains faced severe delays.

Thursday's disruption was made worse by a District line signal failure and a broken-down Northern line train at Nine Elms, affecting rush-hour commuters across the capital.
