Chancellor John Healey is expected to back the funding scheme and could announce his approval in the Budget on October 28, though the Treasury has not made a final decision. Lord Sadiq Khan says the Stratford International project is close to getting 'over the line'. Under his plan, one in three trains to and from France may stop there. Revamping it may cost just £20 million because passport booths and even toilets were fitted long ago.

Stratford International was completed in 2006 but has only ever served Southeastern trains to Kent.

The cash would come from London keeping business rates that currently help fund other regions.

Sir Richard Branson's Virgin is exploring running services from there to challenge Eurostar.
