Lost man is rescued in the Lake District during Storm Austen after rescuers spot his head torch at 2.40am

He had sat alone in the Upper Esk since 6pm on Friday, wearing every spare layer, with his phone and power bank both dead. His parents raised the alarm after his last known position at Taylor Gill Force near Scafell Pike. More than 45 volunteers, two Coastguard helicopters and search dogs braved 50-60mph gusts. Humberside Coastguard flew him to safety.

Chad Dixon of Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team called him 'a very lucky chap'.

Dixon fumed: 'Why should anybody be out in this weather?'
