Lucy Powell is slated over plans to let teachers work four-day weeks while pupils must still attend FIVE

Headteacher Emily May warned the idea is 'not child-centric' and sends the wrong message while schools battle attendance. The Education Secretary has written to Dr Mike Aldred, chairman of the School Teachers' Review Body, asking it to examine relaxing the 195-day rule. Teachers would cram their 1,265 hours into four longer days. Colleagues would be timetabled to cover the fifth.
May, of Willingdon Community School, said persistent absenteeism has doubled.
One parent asked: 'Don't they have enough time off?'
Powell insists the change 'must not affect pupil time in schools'.
