M6 northbound shut between Shareshill and Gailey after overnight roadworks overrun due to tarmac and machinery failures

From the Newshound archive · first published 30 September 2026.

Drivers on the M6 in Staffordshire are facing hour-long delays after overnight roadworks ran over schedule, leaving the northbound carriageway closed between junction 11 at Shareshill and junction 12 at Gailey. National Highways cited tarmac supply problems and a mechanical breakdown as the cause. Six miles of queuing traffic are stretching back towards Walsall, with surrounding roads including the A460 and A5 also heavily congested. Northbound drivers are being diverted at J11 via the hollow circle diversion symbol onto the A460.

The roadworks had been due to finish by 6am but the closure was still in place during the morning rush hour.

Nearby roads including the A460 through Shareshill and the A5 are also at a standstill as traffic seeks alternative routes.
