Emergency services and National Highways contractors were called to the southbound M6 at 15:35 GMT on Saturday after a van caught fire between Gravelly Hill Interchange and junction five near Castle Bromwich. The spillage forced a full closure of all four lanes from around 16:00, trapping drivers inside the cordon. The road fully reopened at around 19:30 after roughly three and a half hours.

No injuries were reported and the incident involved only a single vehicle.

Two lanes reopened at around 18:30, with 30-minute delays still building on the approach.

Motorists caught inside the closure were released via lane four while the surface was treated.
