Macron bans 'illegitimate' protests and blames 'seditious' 'ultra-left groups' for France's worst riots in years

Some 2,700 people have been arrested and 217 jailed in fast-track trials since last Saturday's looting, Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said. President Emmanuel Macron accused the rioters of trying 'to bring down the Republic'. Only union marches will be allowed this Saturday, on routes steered away from city centres. Sentinelle soldiers will join a security operation 20% bigger than last week's.

The government has admitted police 'lost control' of last weekend's violence.

Macron will chair a defence council on Friday to decide further crackdown measures.

Trump blamed 'migrants, jihadists, and communists', and Macron hit back at 'stupid' comments.
