Macron promises 'concrete measures' for protesting students on a Marseille visit after weeks of rioting and looting across France
Clashes between protesters and riot police in Paris, as largely peaceful nationwide marches turned violent by evening despite a 70,000-strong deployment that prevented the arson seen a week earlier.
Emmanuel Macron admitted authorities had 'not anticipated at all' the scale of the October 17 riots, when protesters stormed Marseille city hall. He blamed social media as 'tools for mobilising the worst impulses'. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is expected to unveil the package after meeting student unions, with changes to the Parcoursup admissions system tipped. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez warned Halloween will be 'complicated again'.
Police arrested 1,435 people nationwide during Saturday's demonstrations, Nuñez said.
France is to deploy 3,000 extra substitute teachers to struggling high schools.
Unions plan a general strike on November 5, after more protests on October 31.
