Tyla Wharmby, 24, of Ramsgate, inflicted catastrophic head injuries on 13-week-old Hunter Hodges — injuries doctors likened to those sustained in a high-speed motorcycle crash or a multi-level fall. Hunter, born eight weeks prematurely and weighing just over 10lbs, died of cardiac arrest that afternoon from a fractured skull and severe brain swelling. Wharmby was convicted by a majority jury verdict at Canterbury Crown Court and will face sentencing on a date yet to be set.

Wharmby had admitted a 'short fuse' and told the court he could sometimes 'lose control', but blamed Hunter's 19-year-old mother Shannon Hodges for the injuries.

Investigators concluded that Wharmby had given a false account of what happened and that an earlier injury to Hunter was consistent with violent shaking carried out by Wharmby.

Detective Inspector Adam Marshall said Wharmby's 'appalling actions' were exposed by meticulous scrutiny of complex digital and forensic evidence.
