A 41-year-old man died late on Saturday night after failing to stop for Bedfordshire Police and crashing his grey Audi into a tree near Caddington. Officers had spotted the car travelling without lights on High Street South in Dunstable at around 10.30pm, after which a pursuit got under way on the A5183 towards Markyate. First aid was administered by officers and emergency services, but the man was confirmed dead at shortly before 11.30pm.

The Audi left the carriageway just seven minutes into the chase, with no other vehicles involved in the collision.

Bedfordshire Police made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which has launched a formal investigation.

A cordon was placed on the A5 between Kensworth Turn and Caddington while emergency services responded to the scene.
