A man fired arrows at passing vehicles on Huddersfield Road in Skelmanthorpe, West Yorkshire, on Tuesday evening, with bystanders heard crying 'Oh my God' as loud thuds rang out when arrows struck cars and a van. He started by throwing rubbish and household items from his moving car before stopping and opening fire with the bow. Villagers physically restrained the 68-year-old before armed police arrived and arrested him at 5.58pm. He has since been detained under the Mental Health Act.

Arrows were found embedded in the side of a van and lodged in car tyres, though no injuries were reported.

Brave members of the public held the man down while armed officers were still being deployed to the scene.

Detective Chief Inspector Oliver Coates urged the public to 'avoid unhelpful speculation' as Kirklees District CID investigates the full circumstances.
