Man accused of ramming Australian MP Helen Haines is to face court as his family call her a 20-year friend

Brendan Nugent, 43, has been charged with intentionally causing serious injury, dangerous driving and harming a Commonwealth official. Helen Haines, 65, has lost one leg, and surgeons are fighting to save the other at The Alfred hospital. Victoria Police Commissioner Mike Bush admitted police had 'no intelligence holdings' on Nugent. He is due in Wangaratta court on Wednesday and could seek bail.

Barber Ricky Jefferies dragged Nugent from the LandCruiser and pulled a knife from his pocket.

Tarrawingee neighbours allege he made threats and ran over a dog, and some took out AVOs.

Police say Nugent turned around, pinned Haines against her car, reversed and rammed her again.
