Man accused of running down Australian MP Helen Haines is refused bail, and his family were her FRIENDS for 20 years

Brendan Nugent, 43, lived alone in an overgrown shack near Tarrawingee, surrounded by discarded booze bottles and rubbish. Neighbours claim he terrorised them for years, threatening residents and even running over a family dog. He backed Haines during her 2019 campaign, and she followed his X account. Haines, 65, has lost a leg and remains critical in The Alfred hospital in Melbourne.

Nugent holds a master's degree in forest ecosystems science and once campaigned against logging.

A former fellow campaigner said he was 'reasonable and thoughtful' before he 'drifted away'.

His X account called him 'pro-Gaza' and said 'the world should be run by dogs and children'.
