Manchester City supporters hurled bananas into the away section at Anfield on Sunday in a deeply troubling episode that cast a shadow over City's opening fixture following the club's guilty verdict on more than 100 breaches of Premier League financial rules. Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki got the goals in a crushing 3-0 victory, a result that came after Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was controversially shown a red card on 62 minutes. Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola described the first yellow card shown to Gravenberch as a 'joke', and Jamie Carragher agreed the referee was 'far too quick to get the card out'.
An independent commission ruled that Man City had deployed 'sham' contracts to conceal undisclosed payments of more than £800m between 2009 and 2018.
