Man dies after Northern train strikes van at Burscough level crossing, leaving two passengers injured

A Northern train struck a van at a level crossing near Martins Lane in Burscough, West Lancashire, at 3.18pm on Saturday, killing the driver. British Transport Police confirmed the van's sole occupant died at the scene, while two train passengers sustained minor injuries. Authorities are not treating the incident as suspicious and inquiries into the full circumstances are continuing. All lines between Wigan Wallgate and Southport remain blocked, with replacement buses adding up to 60 minutes to journey times.
A passenger posted from the train: 'I'm still on the train with my kids. We are all SHOOK.'

Disruption on the Wigan Wallgate to Southport line is forecast to last for the remainder of Saturday.
