Father of man charged over car attack that cost Australian MP Helen Haines a leg says she is family friend

Rod Nugent and partner Christine Cunningham called the 'shocking and horrific crime' devastating and unfathomable, and pledged to help Victoria Police. Brendan Nugent, 43, faces three charges, including intentionally causing serious injury, which carries up to 20 years. Police allege his Toyota LandCruiser rammed Dr Haines, 65, twice outside her Wangaratta office. He will appear in court on Wednesday.

Surgeons are fighting to save Dr Haines's other leg and she remains critical.

Barber Ricky Jefferies pulled the suspect from the car as bystanders subdued him.

Neighbours allege Nugent threatened residents for years and ran over a family dog.
