Activist is charged over alleged ramming that cost Australian MP Helen Haines a leg, and his family call her a FRIEND
Brendan Nugent, 43, of Tarrawingee, will face Wangaratta court on Wednesday charged with intentionally causing serious injury and harming a Commonwealth official. Surgeons at Melbourne's Alfred hospital are fighting to save Haines' other leg. Police allege the driver did a U-turn, hit her, then reversed and struck again. His father Rod Nugent called it a 'shocking and horrific crime'.
Barber Ricky Jefferies pulled the suspect from the LandCruiser and took a knife off him.
Anthony Albanese pulled out of a $2,500-a-head Labor fundraiser as news broke.
The suspect's social media carried anti-Israel and anti-logging posts.
