Australian MP who lost a leg was a family FRIEND for 20 years, says father of the man charged over the attack
Brendan Nugent, 43, from Tarrawingee, faces three charges, including intentionally causing serious injury, and will appear at Wangaratta Magistrates' Court on Wednesday. Rod Nugent and Christine Cunningham called the attack 'devastating and unfathomable'. Helen Haines, 65, the independent MP for Indi, is critical but stable at Melbourne's Alfred hospital. Surgeons are fighting to save her other leg.
Social media posts linked to Nugent refer to Gaza and to his past campaigning against logging.
The driver reportedly reversed and struck Haines a second time outside her Wangaratta office.
Barber Ricky Jefferies restrained the suspect and took a knife from him.
