Man is charged over Australian MP car attack as his own father says she is a 20-year family friend

Rod Nugent and his partner Christine Cunningham called the alleged attack on Helen Haines 'devastating and unfathomable' and pledged to help police. Their son Brendan Nugent, 43, faces three charges, including intentionally causing serious injury. The independent MP for Indi lost a leg after being allegedly rammed twice in Wangaratta, Victoria. Nugent is due before Wangaratta Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

Barber Ricky Jefferies ran from his shop and pulled the driver from the LandCruiser.

Nugent's online posts reportedly referenced Gaza and earlier anti-logging campaigning.

The intentional injury charge carries a maximum jail term of 20 years.
