Man locked up indefinitely in psychiatric hospital after ONE PUNCH killed grandfather-of-five at Ilford station

Ayodele Jamgbadi, 30, of Kingston Road, Ilford, threw a single punch at Jorge Ortega — a 61-year-old Elizabeth line worker and grandfather of five — at Ilford station in December 2024. Ortega died two days later after suffering a severe traumatic brain injury. Jamgbadi had missed his train and was kicking a wall on platform three when Ortega and two colleagues approached to calm him. A jury unanimously concluded that Jamgbadi carried out the fatal act, but serious mental health problems meant he was deemed unfit to stand trial.

Any discharge, transfer or leave for Jamgbadi requires approval from the Secretary of State for Justice or the Mental Health Tribunal.

Ortega's family said: 'We want Jorge to be remembered for the life he lived, not for the way he was taken from us.'

The family described Ortega as 'hardworking, kind, generous, caring, funny, wise' and said he had a rare gift for art and drawing.
