Robert Lloyd, 53, from Denton, Tameside, stunned detectives last October by turning himself in at a police station and admitting his part in the 1994 murder of Michael McDermott, 26. Lloyd was among a gang of masked men, armed with baseball bats and knives, who forced their way into a home in Moston and stabbed McDermott as he lay on a sofa. Manchester Crown Court sentenced Lloyd to life with a minimum of 17 years after he pleaded guilty to murder.
The gang attacked McDermott at a relative's home on Ashville Terrace at 10.30pm on 9 November 1994 before fleeing in a waiting getaway vehicle.
Reporting restrictions kept the conviction under wraps for months while Greater Manchester Police pressed ahead with the hunt for the other masked attackers.
Detective Inspector Rachel Smith says the investigation remains 'very much active' as officers work to identify Lloyd's accomplices.
