Manhunt is launched for gunman after a man in his 30s is 'shot multiple times' near Woolwich's Royal Artillery Barracks

Paramedics attended the victim, who had sustained a head injury, on Frances Street near Ogilby Street shortly after 8pm on Thursday; London's Air Ambulance also dispatched a trauma team. He remains in a east London hospital in a life-threatening condition and under police guard. Armed officers and a dog unit combed the area without locating any suspects. No arrests have been made.

Police do not believe the shooting has any connection to the barracks, which are home to 700 soldiers.

Detectives are reviewing CCTV footage while forensic teams gather bullet casings from the scene.

Social media witnesses place the gunman close to a bus stop on a busy road.
