Many are feared trapped after a Nairobi high-rise collapses in Kenya and police fire tear gas at looters

Plasterer Joseph Kaula was working on the fifth floor and says he was 'the last person to walk out' before the Eastleigh building came down on Friday. He fears colleagues were caught in the basement. Hours later, rescuers were still prodding the rubble with poles stripped from trees. Nairobi police chief Issa Mohamud warned the wreck was leaning on its neighbour and could collapse again.

The ground floor was occupied by three businesses during construction: an electronics shop, a butchery and a grocery.

One injured woman was pulled out, but another trapped person crying for help fell silent.

Nairobi recorded 86 building collapses between 2009 and 2019.
